Drinking green tea is great for your health – and may be even better for your skin. Enter matcha green tea: a powdery powerhouse with big benefits for your complexion.

We’re shining a spotlight on why we love matcha for skin, and giving you a peek at our newest matcha kit treatments for a healthy glow!

How We Source Matcha & Why We (and You) Will Love This Green Dream

What’s not to love about matcha? With its shining reputation as a complexion gamechanger, it’s no wonder this trending skin care ingredient has other teas turning green with envy.

While it’s certainly popular in 2021, this finely milled green tea leaf has actually been the ‘it’ beverage in Japan and China for centuries. The spirit of the tea itself encourages us to invest in only the highest quality ingredient: which is why we source our organic matcha from Encha Matcha and from Aiya Matcha, who recounts the history of this unique tea: “For over 800 years, Matcha has been the focal point of Zen Buddhist monks as a revered form of art, an instrument for meditation, and a valued ingredient for health.”

Both operations offer the highest quality, organic matcha green tea sourced directly from their native farm in Japan.

You already know about our endless love for the benefits of green tea – and why it’s in many of our products – so our love for matcha should come as no surprise. With its careful processing methods, matcha is a highly concentrated and more potent alternative to green tea with some mega beauty benefits.

#1: Combats inflammation
Matcha is a rich source of powerful antioxidants, making it an all-star at reducing redness. It can also slow skin cell production that can contribute to flaking and inflammation. So if you’re suffering from acne, rosacea, or redness, matcha can help soothe your skin.

#2: Reduces puffiness
Matcha is loaded with vitamin K: a powerful vitamin that promotes better blood circulation. The caffeine and tannins in matcha shrink blood vessels for a tighter, brighter complexion. It’s also able to decrease morning face puffiness and dark, puffy under eye circles.

#3: Combats premature aging
Matcha’s vibrant green color is thanks to the high amount of chlorophyll it contains. Chlorophyll can protect our skin from sun damage and reduce photo-aging, which means fewer wrinkles and sunspots. This powdery green dream also contains collagen supporting, anti-aging vitamin B2 and reparative, softening vitamin E.

#4: Helps fight acne
Another important compound found in matcha, epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) offers antibacterial and antibiotic properties that help with pimples and acne-prone skin. The polyphenols in matcha can also break down the bacterial membranes that cause acne.

#5: Promotes a more even complexion
The high content of EGCG found in matcha promotes smoother, more supple skin. This is due to its ability to rejuvenate skin cells and support skin structure. The powerful antioxidants in matcha fight against hyperpigmentation, accelerated aging, and sun damage.

#6: Protects against environmental stressors
Matcha EGCG is also a very powerful free-radical scavenger, reducing the oxidative stress that can accelerate cellular aging. The chlorophyll also present in matcha protects our skin by shielding it from pollutants in our environment that can damage and clog our pores.

#7: Calms the skin
Matcha contains anti-inflammatory polyphenols called catechins, making it into a powerful antioxidant that's suitable for all skin types. It’s a great option for potentially sensitive skin or reactive skin.

Our Matcha Skin Care Collection

Since matcha is more highly concentrated than traditional green tea, it’s better suited for more intensive treatments. For this reason, we’ve added matcha to an elite lineup of products – including two brand new formulas!
