Best Actress Oscar nominee Melissa McCarthy wore 100% PURE to the 91st Annual Academy Awards — get her look here!
Posted on February 25, 2019 Written by: 100% PURE®100% PURE was back on the red carpet last night — this time, fruit pigmented® makeup made its Oscar debut! It was our absolute pleasure to partner with celeb Makeup Artist Georgie Eisdell, whose clients include the likes of Carey Mulligan (Suffragette), Sophie Turner (Game of Thrones), and Thandie Newton (Westworld).
But WHO was our red carpet darling, you ask? It was Eisdell’s makeup muse of the day: the simply gorgeous, Best Actress Oscar Nominee Melissa McCarthy! We’ve been fans of Melissa since, well, take your pick: Gilmore Girls, Bridesmaids (living for that limber Birkenstock performance), Spy — whatever Melissa’s a part of, it’s sure to be loads of fun (I mean, did you see her “bunny queen” costume when presenting the award for Costume Design?!).
The American actress, writer, producer and fashion designer has been up for an Oscar before — for Best Supporting Actress in Bridesmaids — but this was her first time nominated for the role of leading lady. As real-life celebrity biographer (and veritable cat lady) Lee Israel, McCarthy’s character in Can You Ever Forgive Me takes a dark, troubled turn — not what we’re used to seeing from this infectiously adorable comedienne, but simply memorable all the same (and critics agree).
McCarthy’s red carpet look was set to stunning with a smokey eye, edgy updo, and voluptuously draped, creamy silk cape top and impeccably tailored black trousers. She hit the carpet with director husband and regular co-star, Ben Falcone.

For Melissa McCarthy’s red carpet beauty look, makeup artist Georgie Eisdell was inspired by the actress’s tailored, color-blocked cape creation when dreaming up her makeup look. “I wanted her skin to be flawless and her eyes to really pop,” she explained. “We went for a classic smokey eye and a gorgeous soft lip.”
Want more details? Follow the 5 simple steps below to get Melissa’s red carpet look!
STEP 1: Soft, poreless skin
To show off Melissa’s heart-shaped face, killer cheekbones, and seafoam eyes, her deep brown hair was first lifted away from the face in an elegant, braided knot. To emulate her soft, poreless complexion, start with an application of Mattifying Primer; massage it gently into skin, and allow to set for 90 seconds before moving on to foundation.
Follow with our Healthy Foundation applied with a freshly cleansed makeup blender, and gently dusted touches of Bamboo Blur Powder anywhere you tend to battle excessive shine.
PRO TIP: Going “matte” with your makeup look? Be sure to amp up the hydration before you begin your makeup routine. Try our Deep Hydration Sheet Mask to quench skin’s thirst before layering on your makeup.
STEP 2: Lightly flushed cheeks
Soft, blushing tones were popular on the red carpet last night, and Eisdell’s look for Melissa certainly fit the bill. To give Melissa’s cheeks a subtle, natural flush, Eisdell used a small amount of Fruit Pigmented® Blush in Mauvette on the apple of the cheek. To avoid overdoing it on your blush, dip a medium sized round, fluffy brush gently — only once — into your blush pan. Tap twice on the edge of the pan, then softly swipe a few times against the apple of your cheek.
To “shape the face and add a little warmth,” she used Cocoa Pigmented Bronzer in Cocoa Kissed on Melissa’s fair, peachy skin. To learn how to contour and add warmth to your unique face shape, check out our handy guide to contouring!
A Best Actress Oscar nominee simply must wear a little shimmer to the biggest night in Hollywood! Eisdell swiped a little Gemmed Luminizer in Rose Gold (made with REAL gemstones!) onto Melissa’s cheek bones “to give a stunning glow” to her skin, and complement the soft warmth of her cheeks.
STEP 3: Subtly sculpted brows
The leading role of Melissa McCarthy’s red carpet makeup look went to the eyes, but brows played an important supporting role!
Our 100% PURE tea and cocoa pigmented Long Last Brows sculpted the shape and edge of Melissa’s brows, but Eisdell opted for the shade Taupe to keep them subtle and soft. Using a fine, angled brush, she “extended the brow slightly to really shape the eye.” Extending the end of your brow will frame the eye, and help to draw the focus where you want it most.
STEP 4: Sultry, smokey eyes
With Melissa’s high-waisted black trousers and exquisitely flattering cream blouse, an edgy smokey eye was the perfect answer for highlighting this bold beauty look.
Georgie Eisdell used a combination of 100% PURE’s Fruit Pigmented® Eye Shadows to make Melissa’s eyes the key focus of her look. First, she used the shade Mink on the lid and blended it up into the crease. She added the shimmery, dusty pink-brown of shade Sugared onto the center of the lid, for a touch of Oscar-inspired luster. To finish, the shade Bronze was applied to Melissa’s lash line to create depth. To get a truly smokey effect, bring all of these colors beneath the eye with a small, smudger brush.
What’s a smokey eye without a healthy helping of midnight-black mascara? “I applied two layers of 100% PURE Fruit Pigmented® Ultra Lengthening Mascara in Black Tea, making sure to push and wiggle the product into the lashes to make them full and fluffy,” reports Eisdell. Our mascara wand is designed to finely separate and lengthen each lash, while distributing lash-healthy, deep black pigment that’s colored from micronized tea leaves.
This bold and dramatic eye makeup look ended with a finely lined application of Long Last Liquid Eye Liner in Black Tea. This smudge-proof liquid formula makes the lash line appear denser, fuller, and creates “the perfect flick to finish off the eye.”
STEP 5: Matte & gloss blended lips
Fitting with the theme of nudes and blush lipstick tones popular on the 91st Academy Awards beauty scene, Melissa wore a duo of matte and gloss lip colors. First was a layer of cool, antique pink Cocoa Butter Matte Lipstick in Cassia, which helped to prime the lips by locking in moisture.
For a bit of shine, the cool, deep pink of Lip Caramel in Butterchew was added over the top — a super user-friendly liquid lipstick that’s perfect for touch-ups. These subtle, nude pinks helped to make her bright, smokey eyes pop — while still giving her look a soft and feminine finish.
